With Mother's Day around the corner I find myself in the same predicament as I always do this time of year — trying to figure out what to get my Mom. My mom is a lesbian, has been out of the closet since I was four (I'm now 28). Over the years she has become more and more butch which means all the frilly pink and purple cards and gifts just don't work.Perhaps.. a tool basket? Photo by Dave O.

In my dream world there's someone who follows me around and showers me with these incredible yellow ranunculus flowers from Flower Muse. Every single day of my life. You guys already know how I love Blurb books, but what you may NOT know is that now I love them EVEN SUPER DUPER MORE. A friend recently brought it to my attention that you can make books from your Facebook and Instagram photos — an idea that had me shrieking from glee a little bit. Between those two apps I have hundreds of photos just sitting in albums online, and they're not all saved somewhere else. In fact, the photos I'd most want to put into an album are the ones that are straight from my phone — the same ones I'd never think to print otherwise. My husband's sister has just had her first baby, and they've asked him to be godfather; they understand that he's a staunch atheist and will not be part of his niece's religious education. All of the complexities there aside for a moment, here's my question: what do my husband and I give her as a christening gift? My best friend is pregnant. Lately the preggo hormones have been making her very depressed and I was thinking about making up a care package for her — one that's all about her and not so much focused on baby stuff. I know there are a lot of products that pregnant women can't use or even come in contact with, so I was wondering if any of you could suggest some things that would be safe and useful for a mama to be. My baby is about to turn one and I've been looking online at lists of age-appropriate toys. Simple puzzles, shape-sorter toys, stacking toys, etc, all sound great — but dolls are also on the list. I'm not sure how I feel about that. She's so young! We get it: baby registries and big box retail outlets can be BIG turn-offs. What makes our sponsor SimpleRegistry so rad is that you can use it for anything kid-related: college funds, music lessons or ballet classes, new baby stuff, your teen's study abroad trip.. the list just keeps going. I'm a big fan of metals in jewelry, which makes our sponsor, ring-creator extraordinaire Tinahdee extra delightful to me. She works with gold, silver, copper, and bronze, and creates the pieces full of meaning and charm. Tina is a self-taught artisan: she learned to put jewelry together by reading books, articles, and watching countless videos on YouTube. I think this makes her work extra-special: when you order a piece from her, you're connecting with a woman who deeply loves what she's creating. |
